Ophthalmology 685 - Veterans' Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS)

Welcome to the VAPSHCS Clerkship! We are pleased to have you as a member of the service and hope the two weeks are educational and rewarding.

The Ophthalmology Clinic, located on the First Floor of the new hospital in the DM&S Wing, East Clinic, is staffed by:

James C. Orcutt, MD, PhD Chief of Ophthalmology
Elaine L. Chuang, MD Ophthalmologist
Philip P. Chen, MD Ophthalmologist
Ken Hamrick, OD Optometrist/Clinic Director
Anh-Thu Nguyen, OD Optometrist
Joan Griffith, RN Clinic Nurse
Sandra Lee, RN Clinic Nurse
Adele Bennett Ophthalmic Technician

A second- and/or third-year Ophthalmology Resident from the University of Washington is in the clinic, or in the O.R., on a rotating basis (every 3 months) and will be your primary mentor. The Attendings rotate during the week (including a Retina Fellow, who staffs the clinic on Tuesdays), and all are eager to assist in the learning process, as is the Optometry staff (including a Resident from the American Lake VA Program).

On the First Day of your rotation, please go to the scheduled site. On the Second Thursday Morning you are scheduled for didactic sessions in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Washington [refer to the clerkship schedule for times]. Your participation in both classes is required. VAPSHCS Clinics are on Monday afternoon, all day Tuesday, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday afternoon, and all day Friday. Clinic begins at 8:00 AM and runs until completion (around 5:00 PM). You are welcome and encouraged to participate in the clinic. When/if you feel comfortable doing so, you may evaluate patients and present them to either the Resident or the Attending in the clinic.

Grand Rounds are held on Thursday Mornings from 10:45 AM to 12:15 PM. Residents and Attending Ophthalmologists congregate in the UW Eye Center and you are encouraged to join us.

Surgical procedures are scheduled on Mondays* and Wednesdays. Please arrive at the Operating Room at 8:00 AM on Mondays and 9:00 AM on Wednesdays. The O.R. is on the 3rd Floor of the DM&S building. Your role in surgery must be confined to observation, primarily because of the space limitations in ocular surgery.

If, during the rotation, you have additional questions, either the ophthalmology resident or the attending ophthalmologist will be glad to answer them. Please feel free to contact any of the personnel listed above for specific questions you have during the course of your rotation. If you have questions before your rotation, please contact me [Dr. Orcutt] at (206) 764-2320. Again, we are very pleased to have you on the rotation and look forward to making this a worthwhile educational experience!

James C. Orcutt, MD, PhD
Chief of Ophthalmology

*Exception: The first Monday of your rotation [see schedule].
